I can speak from experience of what happens when you neglect it. I didn't do any mobility work during my twenties. I was very mobile so thought there wasn't any point. Then in my thirties, I started paying the price. I gradually became tighter and less mobile causing all kinds of problems for me such as knee pain, back pain, not moving freely and injury. All of which went away when I started doing more mobility work.
There's no point being big, strong or lean if you aren't able to move well.
What are the benefits of doing mobility work?
Keeps you feeling young: As you age your mobility will decrease if you don't train it. This can result in simple everyday things becoming much harder such as picking things up off the floor, changing your socks, getting off the sofa and many other things. At one point I was having back pain because my hips were tight. I had to get up off the sofa slowly just in case my back gave out. There i was able to lift heavy weights and everyone thinking was in good shape when in reality I was moving like an old man.
Decreases the chance of injury and general pain: I started getting lower back and knee pain because my hips were so tight. After spending a month doing mobility work the pain that had been bothering me for ages was completely gone. I also injured my hip while doing kickboxing. This could have been prevented if I had done more mobility work earlier.
Improve performance: Being able to move your body without restrictions will improve your performance in sports, general exercises, and everyday activities.
Improves posture: Many people have bad posture due to how tight they are. Anterior pelvic tilt is often cause due to poor mobility.
The good thing is that you don't need to spend a long time doing mobility work to see improvements. 5-10 minutes a day will make a big difference.
Just don't do what I did and only do it when things are going wrong. Start before you need it. It's much easier to maintain good mobility than it is to reverse it and gain it back.
